Market Insights
Wisconsin's Iowa hay benchmark at $270.64 a ton delivered, diesel $6.526
For Wisconsin, the Iowa Direct Hay Report serves as the regional benchmark, since no Wisconsin-specific USDA hay report was identified. The Sept. 22 report showed premium alfalfa/grass mix in medium 3x3 squares trading at $240 to $280 a ton delivered, a $270.64 weighted average, and delivered prices include the freight. Sellers were asking $9 a bale for supreme alfalfa small squares and $8 to $9 for premium mixed grass small squares. Midwest diesel was $6.526 a gallon for the week of Sept. 28, according to the Energy Information Administration.
Exceptional drought covers 2.8% of Wisconsin on the Sept. 22 map
Exceptional drought, the worst category, covers 2.8 percent of Wisconsin on the U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of Sept. 22, released Sept. 24, where the Sept. 15 map showed none. The overall dry area shrank, though, from 86.73 percent abnormally dry or worse on Sept. 15 to 67.06 percent. Moderate drought or worse covers 51.43 percent, severe drought or worse 44.08 percent and extreme drought or worse 18.1 percent. Barns in the driest areas likely go into fall with little pasture regrowth and more of the diet coming from stored hay.
Rated dressage in East Troy, WIHA state show in Madison this fall
Sorensen Equestrian Park in East Troy holds its USEF/USDF-rated Dressage October I show Oct. 2 and 3, with stalls at $130 for the two days and classes that qualify for the 2027 USDF regional championships. The park follows with a schooling and western dressage show Saturday, Oct. 10. Speed riders get barrels and pole bending at the Western Wisconsin Horse Show Association's Trick or Trot open speed show, Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Trempealeau County Fairgrounds in Galesville. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Horsemanship Association State Show, where riders compete on school teams, runs Oct. 31 to Nov. 1 in both New Holland Pavilions at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Each runs one or two days, so any lift in short-term stall calls is likely brief and local.
