Market Insights
Columbia Basin hay firm for Washington, orchard grass at $300 a ton
All grades of hay and straw are firm in the Washington-Oregon Columbia Basin Direct Hay Report dated Sept. 18, Washington's regional benchmark, with slow to moderate trade and light to moderate demand. Retail small squares of fair/good alfalfa traded at $280 to $290 a ton, good/premium orchard grass at $300 and good/premium teff at $310. Rain showers slowed trading that week, and trade sources say the remaining second-cutting timothy is riddled with defects not suitable for export. Diesel in the Energy Information Administration's West Coast region outside California was $6.643 a gallon for the week of Sept. 28, and that cost follows every load to the barn.
Washington drought at D1 or worse dips to 65.84%
Moderate drought or worse dipped to 65.84 percent of Washington on the U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of Sept. 22, released Sept. 24, from 69.76 percent the week before. The map shows 93.57 percent of the state abnormally dry or worse, 25.24 percent in severe drought or worse and 4.35 percent in extreme drought. That much dry ground heading into fall likely means pasture does less of the feeding and hay does more.
