Market Insights
Columbia Basin hay firm as drought tightens east of region
Good alfalfa small squares brought $310 per ton and timothy grass $300 per ton as of late August in the Washington-Oregon Columbia Basin benchmark. Trade remains active with very good demand, pushed higher by dry conditions and irrigation needs east of the trade area. Hauler fuel costs are steep too, with West Coast diesel at $6.407 per gallon as of Aug. 24. Higher hay and fuel combine to lift what boarding operations pay for delivered feed.
Drought stress reaches 72% of Washington, pasture risk high
Nearly 72 percent of Washington was in drought condition D1 or worse as of Aug. 25, with 25 percent experiencing severe drought (D2 or worse). Dry fall pasture and late-season irrigation strain will carry into September and October when most barns finish turnout season. Operators relying on summer grazing into fall may face early move-in requests from owners looking to shelter horses indoors.
Cascade finals and fall shows fill the September calendar
Cascade Finals, a USEF-rated hunter jumper show, runs Sept. 3-6 at the Washington State Horse Park. The NW Autumn Classic, also USEF-rated with outreach classes, holds Sept. 9-12. Both pull exhibitors from across the region for multi-day stays.
