Market Insights
Columbia Basin retail hay $265-$290/ton and firm; WA gas tops $5
USDA's Washington-Oregon (Columbia Basin) Direct Hay Report (July 24, 2026) calls all grades of hay and straw steady to firm with active trade and good demand, on 12,000 confirmed tons versus 3,405 in the July 6 report. Retail small squares brought $290/ton for good/premium 2nd-cut orchard grass, $265/ton for fair/good 1st-cut, and $270/ton for good/premium alfalfa, all F.O.B. covered, while dairy alfalfa 3x4s hit $215/ton on 2nd cut. EIA's week of July 27, 2026 shows Washington regular gasoline at $5.010/gal (up $0.77 y/y) and West Coast-less-California diesel at $5.545/gal (up $1.36), raising hauling costs into the fall.
Washington drought jumps in July: 63.7% now in moderate drought or worse
The U.S. Drought Monitor map valid July 28, 2026 shows 89.52% of Washington abnormally dry or worse, 63.70% in moderate drought or worse, 8.10% in severe drought and 0.94% of extreme drought (which first appeared in early July), up sharply from 44.72% D1+ and 6.35% D2+ on the June 30, 2026 map. USDA NASS Crop Progress for the week ending July 19, 2026 rates Washington pasture and range 28% very poor to poor with topsoil moisture 70% very short to short. Dryland turnout is thinning fast, so budget for earlier hay feeding even where irrigated pasture is holding.
Cascade Finals returns to WA Horse Park Sept 3-6 with USEF classes
Cascade Horse Shows lists the 2026 Cascade Finals, a 4-day USEF hunter/jumper show, for September 3-6, 2026 at the Washington State Horse Park in Cle Elum, with stall, RV site and golf cart requests having opened April 20. The Horse Park's own booking calendar also lists an August 2026 Buckle Up! ranch horse schooling show ahead of the Finals. Puget Sound and Yakima-area barns should expect pre-show fitting, layover and hauling demand over Snoqualmie Pass in early September.
