Market Insights

Columbia Basin stable hay firm; timothy up $10-15/ton

USDA's Washington-Oregon (Columbia Basin) Direct Hay Report for the week ending June 26, 2026 shows retail and stable new-crop hay firm, with timothy and grass hay selling $10.00-$15.00 per ton higher than the prior report. Retail small-bale alfalfa traded at $260-$275 per ton, orchard grass small bales at $280-$310, and premium timothy small bales at $310. With trade very active and exporter timothy in good demand, Washington barns are bidding against export buyers for new crop — locking in winter hay early is the play.

Fourth drought year: Yakima water at 52%, dryness spreads

Washington is under a statewide drought emergency declared April 8, 2026 — the fourth in a row for the Yakima Basin — and the Department of Ecology reported May 1 that proratable irrigators there will receive only 52% of their normal water supply. Conditions worsened through June: U.S. Drought Monitor data valid June 30, 2026 put 84.43% of the state at least abnormally dry and 44.72% in moderate drought or worse, up from 68.15% abnormally dry in mid-June. Less irrigation water means thinner summer pasture and tighter local hay ground for boarding barns east of the Cascades.

Evergreen Classic brings show demand to Cle Elum July 30

The WSHJA-rated Evergreen Classic hunter/jumper show runs July 30-August 2, 2026 at the Washington State Horse Park in Cle Elum, featuring 3'3" and lower Hunters, Level 2 Jumpers, and Outreach classes. It caps a July calendar at the park that also includes the Buckle Up! ranch horse schooling series. For barns along the I-90 corridor in Kittitas County, show week concentrates traveling exhibitors and their demand for stalls, layovers, and short-term board.
