Market Insights

Texas hay prices and demand steady, Gulf Coast diesel at $5.955

The Texas Direct Hay Report dated Sept. 18 says hay prices and demand remain steady. Sellers asked $135 to $140 a bale for premium Bermuda grass large rounds in the Panhandle, $65 to $75 for good Bermuda large rounds in Central Texas and $13 to $15 for premium Bermuda small squares in South Texas. Gulf Coast diesel sat at $5.955 a gallon for the week of Sept. 28, according to the Energy Information Administration, and freight comes on top of those F.O.B. asks. The next Texas report is due Oct. 2.

Texas drought: 84.2% moderate or worse, 4.25% exceptional

Most of Texas is in drought, with 84.2 percent of the state in moderate drought (D1) or worse on the U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of Sept. 22, released Sept. 24. Severe drought (D2) or worse covers 54.23 percent, extreme drought (D3) or worse 19.84 percent and exceptional drought (D4), the top category, 4.25 percent. The Sept. 18 USDA Texas hay report, citing the U.S. Drought Monitor, says much of Texas saw flash drought, with extreme to exceptional drought in far south Texas and most of northern Texas. Short grazing puts more of the ration on hay, which pushes up feed costs for pasture-based barns.

Katy dressage and reining weekends, NCHA Futurity in Fort Worth

Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy starts October with the GAIG/USDF Region 9 Championships and HDS Autumn Classic dressage show Oct. 1 to 4. GHHJA Octoberfest follows Oct. 10 to 11, then the Pumpkin Slide Reining Show Oct. 23 to 25, the GSWEC Autumn Classic Nov. 4 to 8 and the GSWEC Final Chase Nov. 11 to 15. In Fort Worth, the NCHA lists its Futurity for Nov. 16 to Dec. 12, dates it calls tentative. A monthlong cutting futurity and back-to-back Katy weekends tend to lift stall and layover demand near both venues.
