Market Insights
Texas hay steady, diesel at $5.48 a gallon
Texas hay prices held their ground through late August with good Bermuda grass large rounds at $75-$80 per bale and premium small squares at $12-$15 per bale, according to the Texas Direct Hay Report. Meanwhile, on-highway diesel was $5.481 per gallon as of Aug. 24, a significant cost driver for hay haulers. With most of Texas experiencing at least abnormal dryness, new crop availability may tighten feed inventories in coming weeks, putting upward pressure on both hay costs and hauling bills for boarding operations restocking for fall.
Drought blankets 90% of Texas; pasture quality fading
Abnormal dryness or worse covered 90% of Texas as of Aug. 25, with 57% in severe drought (D1) or worse and 10% in extreme drought (D3) or worse. The Texas Direct Hay Report cited flash drought conditions leading to dry ponds and poor to very poor crop conditions across the state. Boarders are already pulling hay sooner than typical, and fall and winter grazing will likely remain scarce, meaning higher dependency on supplemental feed and tighter margins for pasture-based operations.
September shows kick off the fall season in Texas
Great Southwest Equestrian Center opens September with a full slate: UDJC show Sept. 3-6, Harvest Dressage Classic Sept. 5-6, GSWEC Heritage Reining Sept. 11-13, and GHHJA Fall Fest Sept. 12-13, followed by Southwest Showdown Sept. 16-20 and GSWEC Fall Classic Sept. 24-27.
