Market Insights

Texas hay steady; Gulf Coast diesel jumps 14 cents in a week to $5.09

USDA's Texas Direct Hay Report for the week ending July 24, 2026 calls hay prices and demand steady, with good bermudagrass large rounds asking $65-75 per bale in Central Texas, premium alfalfa small squares at $13.00-16.50 in the Panhandle, and retail/stable bermuda smalls at $12.00-15.00 in South Texas. Fuel is the line item moving: EIA's July 27 survey puts Gulf Coast diesel at $5.087 per gallon, up 14.5 cents in one week, with regular gasoline at $3.690, up 10.2 cents. The next Texas hay report lands August 7, worth re-checking before locking fall hay contracts.

Rains ease Texas drought: 23% in moderate drought, reservoirs 78% full

The U.S. Drought Monitor valid July 28, 2026 shows 37.7% of Texas at least abnormally dry, 23.2% in moderate drought or worse, 9.5% in severe drought, and 1.2% in extreme drought, with no exceptional drought on the map. Relief is real: USDA's July 24 Texas hay report notes 5 to 15+ inches of rain fell on the Hill Country the prior week and cites Water Data for Texas (July 22) putting statewide reservoirs at 78% full. Pasture recovery should trim supplemental feeding for Central Texas barns, though numerous western and southern reservoirs remain below normal.

Katy's Great Southwest stacks seven shows from mid-August into fall

Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy runs GHHJA Fun in the Sun August 15-16 and the HDS Laborious Day show August 22-23, then a packed September: UDJC September 4-6, Heritage Reining September 11-13, Southwest Showdown September 16-20, GSWEC Fall Classic September 24-27, and the HDS Region 9 Championship September 30-October 4. Houston-area barns within hauling distance of Katy should expect steady haul-in, layover, and short-term stall demand through the whole stretch.
