Market Insights
Texas hay prices steady; diesel down 55 cents in a month
USDA's Texas Direct Hay Report for the week ending June 26, 2026 says hay prices and demand remain steady, with premium bermudagrass small squares asking $12.00-$15.00 per bale to retail/stable buyers in South Texas and premium alfalfa small squares at $14.00-$16.50 in the Panhandle. Hauling costs are easing off the spring spike: AAA's Texas diesel average was $4.28 per gallon on July 2, 2026, down 55 cents from a month earlier ($4.83). Diesel is still $1.07 above a year ago ($3.21), so delivered-hay quotes carry fuel costs roughly a third higher than last summer even as the hay itself holds steady.
East Texas drought breaks: D3 down to 2% of state
The US Drought Monitor map valid June 30, 2026 puts extreme drought (D3) at 1.96% of Texas — down from 3.68% on June 16 — with exceptional drought (D4) at 0.00% and total drought coverage (D1-D4) at 32.2%. USDA's June 26 hay report credits late-June downpours tied to Tropical Storm Arthur for broad one-category improvement across eastern Texas, while NWS Fort Worth's June 30 update notes the remaining drought is focused mainly across eastern counties and will be slow to fully erode. Texas A&M AgriLife's June 30 crop report shows the payoff on the ground: East Texas warm-season grasses in good condition and hay production in full swing, supporting pasture turnout and local hay supply heading into July.
Texas 4-H Horse Show fills Bryan stalls July 19-25
The 2026 Texas 4-H Horse Show runs July 19-25, 2026 at the Brazos County Expo in Bryan, drawing more than 350 youth and their families from across the state, with entries across up to 40 competitive divisions. A week-long statewide championship concentrates horses and rigs in Brazos County and pushes short-term stall, layover, and overnight-boarding demand along haul routes into Bryan-College Station. Facilities within reach of the Expo should expect a mid-July bump in short-term boarding and inquiry traffic.
