Market Insights

Tennessee Bermuda small squares trade at $9.50 a bale, diesel $6.526

Trades pooled from across Tennessee put premium Bermuda grass small squares at $9.50 a bale and good mixed grass large rounds at $40, according to the Tennessee Direct Hay Report dated Sept. 27 and corrected Sept. 29. Bundles of 21 premium Bermuda small squares brought $190 to $210, a $208.44 weighted average. The report says demand was good across the state and that dry pasture over the last month has cut the yield from later cuttings. Diesel in the Energy Information Administration's Midwest region, which includes Tennessee, was $6.526 a gallon for the week of Sept. 28.

48.07% of Tennessee in drought, against 17.37% a week earlier

On the U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of Sept. 22, released Sept. 24, 48.07 percent of Tennessee is in moderate drought (D1) or worse, against 17.37 percent on the Sept. 15 map. Severe drought (D2) or worse covers 9.83 percent, extreme drought (D3) 1.01 percent, and 85.06 percent of the state is at least abnormally dry. The USDA NASS Crop Progress report released Sept. 28 rated Tennessee pasture 14 percent very poor, 21 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 26 percent good and 2 percent excellent for the week ending Sept. 27. That points to more hay in the ration for barns that count on fall grazing.

Franklin hunter/jumper weeks, Memphis reining, Shelbyville fall shows

Brownland Farm in Franklin runs three straight hunter/jumper weeks: the Brownland Autumn Challenge Oct. 7 to 11, Autumn Country Oct. 14 to 18 and Autumn Classic Oct. 21 to 25. In Cordova, near Memphis, reiners compete at the TNRHA Rock N' Roll Classic Oct. 14 to 18. The Celebration in Shelbyville lists the Racking Horse World Celebration Oct. 5 to 10, the Spotted Saddle Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association Fall Show Oct. 14 to 17 and the TWHNC Fall Classic Horse Show Nov. 5 to 7. Back-to-back show weeks like Brownland's tend to create short-term stall and layover demand near the grounds.
