Market Insights

Tennessee alfalfa small squares at $13-$15 a bale; diesel $5.64

The Tennessee Direct Hay Report for the week ending Aug. 28 shows alfalfa supreme small squares bundled and delivered at $15 per bale, while good-quality alfalfa small squares F.O.B. trade at $13 per bale. Mixed grass large rounds are trading at $60 F.O.B., and orchard grass premium small squares at $10 F.O.B. On-highway diesel fuel in the Midwest region stands at $5.636 per gallon as of Aug. 24, keeping hauler costs elevated for barns bringing in imported hay. Good demand continues across Tennessee with active buyer movement as drought conditions ease and later cuttings improve.

Tennessee 81% drought-free; pasture outlook favorable

As of Aug. 25, 81 percent of Tennessee is free of drought conditions, with only 19 percent in D0 (Abnormally Dry) or worse and none at D1 or beyond. That leaves pasture in good shape across most of the state, easing feed supplementation pressure on boarding operations, and points to better forage quality and lighter hay purchases through fall.

Walking Horse Celebration and reining events headline September

The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration runs Aug. 26-Sept. 5 in Shelbyville with 1051 horse stalls and 33 barns available, and the facility hosts multiple supporting events drawing regional competitors. The TNRHA Rock N' Roll Reining Classic follows in Oct. 14-18 in Cordova, Memphis, pulling in western riders and their mounts. The Celebration brings thousands of horses to Shelbyville.
