New Holland hay: premium grass $302.73/ton on light receipts

USDA's July 27 Wolgemuth Hay Auction report from New Holland has Premium grass large squares at $290-$330/ton (avg $302.73), Premium alfalfa at $360/ton, and a Supreme alfalfa/grass load topping the sale at $425/ton; Premium mixed small squares — the classic horse bale — averaged $373.50/ton. Receipts were thin at 163 tons of hay, down from 209 the prior week and 218 a year ago. EIA's July 27 survey puts Central Atlantic diesel at $5.579/gal, up 20.9 cents in a week and $1.63 year over year, so expect fuel surcharges on delivered loads into barn country.

Severe drought reaches 6.6% of PA; rain helping pastures

The July 28, 2026 U.S. Drought Monitor shows 26.2% of Pennsylvania abnormally dry or worse, with 15.3% in moderate drought (D1) and 6.6% in severe drought (D2) — dry enough in affected counties that barns there are supplementing pasture with hay early. USDA's crop progress update for the week ending July 26 reported "rain improved pasture, hay, corn, and soybean conditions," with livestock operations monitoring forage quality and feed inventories. If your pastures sit in the D1-D2 zone, lock fall tonnage now while New Holland premium grass still averages about $303/ton.

Devon Fall Classic, Dressage at Devon, PA National stack the fall

The Devon showgrounds host the 13th annual Devon Fall Classic Sept. 10-13 — a jumper festival headlined by the $25,000 Devon Fall Classic open speed stake — followed by Dressage at Devon Sept. 22-27, which pairs world-class dressage with the world's largest open breed show. Two weeks later, the 80th Pennsylvania National Horse Show takes over the PA Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg Oct. 8-18. Southeastern and central PA barns with show clientele should plan for August-September schooling, layover-stall, and hauling demand as fall-circuit prep peaks.
