Market Insights

Indiana benchmark hay at $277.27 a ton for Ohio, Midwest diesel $6.526

Since no Ohio-specific USDA hay report was identified, the Shipshewana Hay Auction in Shipshewana, Ind., stands in as the regional benchmark. At the Sept. 23 sale, good to premium alfalfa/grass mix large rounds brought $270 to $290 a ton, averaging $277.27, and good mixed grass large rounds brought $220. Diesel in the Energy Information Administration's Midwest region was $6.526 a gallon for the week of Sept. 28. Every load hauled into Ohio barns carries that fuel cost.

Ohio 100% drought free on the Sept. 22 map

All of Ohio, 100 percent, is free of both drought and abnormal dryness on the U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of Sept. 22, released Sept. 24. Every weekly map since Aug. 25 has shown the same. Fall pasture goes into October without drought stress, so there is one less pull on the hay that barns are storing for winter.

Quarter Horse Congress runs to Oct. 24, US Dressage Finals in Wilmington

The All American Quarter Horse Congress runs Sept. 26 to Oct. 24 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. New for 2026, every horse entering the grounds needs a current Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. At World Equestrian Center in Wilmington, Fall Classic Series show jumping runs Sept. 30 to Oct. 25, the US Dressage Finals follow Oct. 29 to Nov. 1, and the Midwest Indoors series runs Nov. 4 to 22. That keeps horses shipping into Columbus through Oct. 24 and into Wilmington nearly every week until Nov. 22, which likely brings layover and overflow stall calls to barns near both.
