Market Insights

North Carolina hay benchmark: Bermuda rounds $162.27 a ton, diesel $5.953

In the Alabama Direct Hay Report dated Sept. 17, a Southeast regional benchmark for North Carolina, premium Bermuda grass medium rounds brought $150 to $200 a ton, a $162.27 weighted average, and premium Bermuda small squares $280 to $440. The report called hay prices steady, with moderate trade, good supply and light demand. Lower Atlantic diesel was $5.953 a gallon the week of Sept. 28, according to the Energy Information Administration. The hay prices are F.O.B., so trucking to North Carolina barns comes on top at that diesel price.

63.85% of North Carolina in drought, 27.13% severe or worse

Close to two-thirds of North Carolina, 63.85 percent, is in moderate drought (D1) or worse on the U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of Sept. 22, released Sept. 24. In all, 88.01 percent of the state is abnormally dry (D0) or worse. Severe drought (D2) or worse covers 27.13 percent, extreme drought (D3) or worse 5.52 percent and exceptional drought (D4) 0.34 percent. Fall pasture is likely to run short heading into October, which means more hay per horse at barns built around turnout.

National Horse Show at Tryon and State Fair rodeo fill NC's fall

Tryon International in Mill Spring runs Tryon Fall 3 Sept. 30 to Oct. 4 and Tryon Fall 4 Oct. 6 to 11, part of a weekly hunter/jumper series through Oct. 25. The 143rd National Horse Show runs in its Indoor Complex Oct. 21 to Nov. 1, which keeps show horses around Tryon for most of October. Harmon Classics adds the BRHJA Classic at FENCE in Tryon Oct. 23 to 25 and the Holiday Premiere at TIEC Indoors Nov. 20 to 22. For western riders, the N.C. State Fair's Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh hosts a high school rodeo Oct. 16 and 17 and open barrel racing Oct. 18.
