Market Insights

NC hay crop 58% poor as second cutting lags; diesel up $1.51/gal YoY

USDA NASS rates 58% of North Carolina's hay crop poor or very poor for the week ending July 26, 2026, with second-cutting harvest at just 44% versus 71% a year ago — local supply is likely to be tight this winter. The nearest USDA direct-trade benchmark (Southeast/Alabama report, week ending July 24) shows premium Bermuda small squares steady at $280-$440/ton (weighted average $327.20). With EIA's Lower Atlantic on-highway diesel at $5.255/gal for the week of July 27 — up $1.51 from a year ago — locking in fall and winter hay contracts early beats paying freight-inflated spot prices later.

Severe drought covers 41% of NC; pasture rated 39% poor or very poor

The July 28, 2026 U.S. Drought Monitor shows 92.5% of North Carolina abnormally dry or worse, with 41.4% in severe drought (D2+) and 9.0% in extreme-to-exceptional drought (D3-D4). USDA NASS pasture condition for the week ending July 26 stands at 39% poor/very poor against only 23% good/excellent, so pasture-board horses will need hay supplementation weeks earlier than normal. Late-July rains restored topsoil moisture to 80% adequate-to-surplus, but subsoil remains 43% short/very short — one wet week won't rebuild grazing.

Tryon triple-header Aug 7-9; six-week Fall Series opens September 18

Tryon International stacks three events on one weekend, August 7-9, 2026: the Tryon Summer Finale hunter/jumper show, Summer Dressage 3 & 4 (August 8-9), and the USEF/EVUSA National Vaulting Championships, with PBR Tryon following August 28-29. The Fall Series then opens with Tryon Fall 1 on September 18-20 and runs six hunter/jumper weeks through October 25, building to CSI2*, CSI3*, and CSI5* competition, with The Fork horse trials September 10-13 in between. Boarding barns within trailering distance of Mill Spring should plan for layover and overflow stall demand from mid-August through late October.
