Market Insights
NC drought drives barns into emergency hay-buying mode
NC DEQ introduced exceptional drought (D4) to Union County on April 30 — the first D4 designation in NC in 18 years — with 61 counties in extreme drought (D3). NC State Extension is telling livestock producers the drought may affect hay availability through the summer and to source hay now for both summer and winter. Operators should price fall reserves this month before regional supply tightens further and SE prices follow.
NC diesel at $5.51/gal stacks fuel cost on top of drought-tight hay
AAA's May 4 North Carolina diesel average is $5.506/gal, with regular gas at $4.077. Barns already paying drought-driven hay premiums are also paying more to truck it in, water it in (where municipal restrictions apply), and run farm equipment. For Charlotte and Triangle-area operators, any spring delivery contract written in March needs a fuel-surcharge re-quote before Memorial Day.
Tryon hosts IHSA Nationals and Spring Three Day Event
Tryon International Equestrian Center kicked off May with the IHSA National Championship May 1-3 — Lynchburg's Amaya Bellfield won individual Open Equitation Over Fences and Lynchburg finished fourth as a team, a program best. The Tryon Spring Three Day Event runs May 6-10, with Tryon Spring 1 (CSI 2*/3*) overlapping. Local barns and feed yards near Mill Spring see peak short-term boarding demand all month.
