Market Insights
New York hay benchmark: premium alfalfa $304.82 a ton, diesel $6.531
At the Wolgemuth Hay Auction in New Holland, Pennsylvania, a Northeast regional benchmark for New York, premium alfalfa large squares sold for $300 to $310 a ton on Sept. 28, a $304.82 average. Good grass large squares brought $220 to $270 a ton, a $241.59 average, and premium orchard/timothy large squares $340. Diesel in the Energy Information Administration's Central Atlantic region was $6.531 a gallon for the week of Sept. 28. The auction reports prices F.O.B., so the haul north to New York barns comes on top.
No drought in New York, with 17.96% of the state abnormally dry
New York goes into October with none of the state in moderate drought (D1) or worse, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of Sept. 22, released Sept. 24. Abnormally dry conditions (D0) cover 17.96 percent, and the other 82.04 percent has no drought category at all. That means dry fields are unlikely to push most turnout barns onto hay early.
HITS fall classics and a Syracuse reining show fill NY's October
HITS Hudson Valley Fall Classic I runs Sept. 30 to Oct. 4 at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties with a $20,000 HITS Open Prix, and Fall Classic II follows Oct. 7 to 11 with a $15,000 HITS Open Prix. Reiners head to Syracuse Oct. 14 to 18 for the CNY Reining Horse Association Fall Classic and NEBT Futurity in the Toyota Coliseum at the New York State Fairgrounds. That show carries the NRHA Regional Championships for the Northeast. Both are multiday shows, which can mean overnight and layover stall calls near Saugerties and Syracuse.
