Market Insights
Northeast hay benchmark at $325 a ton; diesel at $5.84
The Wolgemuth Hay Auction in New Holland, Pennsylvania, a Northeast benchmark, priced premium alfalfa at $325 a ton and good grass hay at $253.43 a ton on Aug. 24. On the fuel side, on-highway diesel in the Central Atlantic region was $5.84 a gallon as of Aug. 24, pushing hauling costs higher for barns that depend on delivered hay. Gas was $4.094 a gallon the same week. With fall restocking starting, those fuel premiums will directly compress margins on per-bale costs.
Dry spell light; most of NY unaffected entering fall
As of Aug. 25, New York saw drought at D0 or worse affecting just 13 percent of the state, with only less than 1 percent at D1 or worse severity. The vast majority of pasture is in normal condition, meaning fall grazing should be available longer than in drought years. Boarding operations relying on pasture turnout have little supply pressure going into September and October.
