Market Insights
Northeast hay firm at New Holland; NY-region diesel hits $5.58/gal
USDA's July 27 report from the Wolgemuth Hay Auction in New Holland, PA — the Northeast benchmark market that supplies many New York barns — put Premium grass large squares at $290-$330/ton (avg $302.73) and Premium alfalfa/grass small squares at $365-$390/ton (avg $373.50), on light receipts of 163 tons of hay versus 218 a year ago. USDA publishes no New York-specific hay auction report, so New Holland is the closest primary read on Northeast hay. On fuel, EIA's July 27 survey has Central Atlantic (PADD 1B, which includes New York) on-highway diesel at $5.579/gal — up 20.9 cents in one week and $1.63 from a year ago — with regular gasoline at $4.174/gal. Build the fuel line into any delivered-hay quotes you lock for fall.
Drought edges into New York: 5.4% now in moderate drought
The July 28, 2026 U.S. Drought Monitor map has 13.9% of New York abnormally dry or worse, with moderate drought (D1) covering 5.4% and a 0.4% sliver of severe drought (D2) — though 86.1% of the state carries no dry designation at all. USDA's crop progress roundup for the week ending July 26 said New York dairy and forage farms "received needed moisture in several areas," with producers watching disease pressure and crop maturity. Pastures are mostly holding statewide; if your barn sits in a dry pocket, price third-cutting hay now rather than waiting for winter.
Saratoga closing weeks + HITS fall series tighten NY stalls
Saratoga's expanded 46-day meet runs through Labor Day, Sept. 7, with the $1.25 million DraftKings Travers on Aug. 29 and a six-day closing week Sept. 2-7 — after which Thoroughbreds cycle off the grounds into layup and turnout board. Downstate, HITS Saugerties stacks Hudson Valley VII Aug. 26-30, the CSI4* Hudson Valley VIII Sept. 2-6, the League National Finals Sept. 9-13, and the GAIG/USDF Region 8 Dressage Championships Sept. 17-20. Capital District and Hudson Valley barns should expect strong transient-stall, hauling, and short-term boarding demand through late September.
