Market Insights

New York alfalfa climbs into Northeast top tier

USDA pegged New York alfalfa at $240/ton at the end of April, up $10/ton month over month and trailing only Pennsylvania ($250) in the Northeast. Supplies are moderate but premium horse-quality lots are tight, and the Iran-driven diesel surge — diesel hit $5.62/gal nationally in early May — is layering trucking surcharges on every load moving from upstate hay yards into Hudson Valley and Long Island barns.

New York diesel hits $5.94/gal, second only to California

AAA put New York's statewide diesel average at $5.936/gal on May 4, well above the national diesel average (~$5.57-$5.64) and trailing only California ($7.502). Regular gas is $4.46. For barns running farm trucks, hauling lessons-program clients, or contracting feed-and-shavings deliveries from upstate mills into the Hudson Valley, every monthly fuel line is materially higher than April. Re-quote any standing transport or delivery contracts now.

Old Salem and HITS Saugerties anchor a busy May calendar

Old Salem Farm runs its Spring Horse Shows May 6-10 (FEI CSI2*) and May 13-17 in North Salem, while HITS Hudson Valley opens its Saugerties season with the Spring Premier May 14-17 and HITS Hudson Valley I May 19-24. Eight weeks of HITS competition follow with $3 million in prize money — driving short-term demand for trainer stalls, hauling, and hay across the Hudson Valley and lower Catskills.
