Kentucky alfalfa small squares at $9.56 a bale, Midwest diesel $6.526

Alfalfa small squares brought $9 to $10 a bale F.O.B. farm in the Kentucky Direct Hay Report dated Sept. 10, a $9.56 weighted average for the week ending Sept. 4. Premium alfalfa small squares brought $11, grass small squares $8.50 and orchard grass medium rounds $65. For the week of Sept. 28, the Energy Information Administration put Midwest diesel at $6.526 a gallon. That cost rides along on every load of hay delivered to a barn.

Moderate drought covers 3.46% of Kentucky on the Sept. 22 map

Moderate drought covers 3.46 percent of Kentucky on the U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of Sept. 22, released Sept. 24. The Sept. 15 map showed none. Abnormally dry or worse conditions cover 25.36 percent of the state, and no part of Kentucky is in severe drought. With 74.64 percent of Kentucky showing no dryness at all, dry-pasture worries going into October are limited to pockets of the state.

Thoroughbred Makeover, eventing and rodeo fill Kentucky Horse Park

At Kentucky Horse Park, the UPHA Chapter 9 KY Fall Classic Horse Show runs Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 in the Alltech Arena, and the Retired Racehorse Project's Thoroughbred Makeover follows Oct. 7 to 10. The Hagyard Midsouth Three Day Event and Team Challenge, with a CCI3* and a CCI2*-L, runs Oct. 14 to 18. The North American Shoot-Out Rodeo Finals follow in the Alltech Arena Nov. 27 and 28. Back-to-back weeks of shipped-in horses around Lexington likely keep layover and short-term stall calls coming to nearby barns through October.
