Market Insights
Kentucky alfalfa small squares at $11 a bale, diesel at $5.64
On-highway diesel in the Midwest region was $5.636 per gallon as of Aug. 24, putting pressure on hay transport economics. Meanwhile, Kentucky hay prices from early August show alfalfa small squares at $11-$11.23 per bale weighted average, with mixed grass hay and orchard grass running $4.60-$6 per bale. Haulers passing higher fuel costs to barns will squeeze margin on commodity hay, particularly for operators buying lower-grade small squares and grass hay for boarding strings.
Kentucky drought nearly nonexistent; pasture outlook favorable
As of Aug. 25, drought conditions affecting Kentucky were negligible, with virtually the whole state drought free and less than 1 percent even abnormally dry. This means fall pasture rotation should hold strong through September for barns with turnout acreage. Boarding operations with pasture-inclusive packages face lower risk of feed supplement costs climbing heading into autumn.
September events spike stall demand across disciplines
Multiple high-draw competitions arrive in September: the RMHA International Grand Championship runs Sept. 2-5, the KHJA Fall Show Sept. 10-13, and the KDA Fall Classic Sept. 12-13, all at Kentucky Horse Park.
