Market Insights

KY new-crop alfalfa smalls $9-10 as reported hay volume nearly doubles

Kentucky's Direct Hay Report (July 7, 2026) confirmed 9,976 bales traded, up from 5,441 in the prior June 8 report, with new-crop alfalfa small squares at $9.00-10.00 per bale (weighted average $9.29), premium alfalfa/orchard mix at $10.00, and orchard grass smalls at $6.00-8.00, all FOB the farm. Timothy smalls ran $6.00-8.00 ($6.80 weighted average). EIA's July 27 survey has Midwest (PADD 2) diesel at $5.196 per gallon, up 20.8 cents in a week, so delivered-hay quotes are climbing even where FOB prices hold.

Kentucky mostly drought-free at 81%, but 2.8% slips into severe

The U.S. Drought Monitor valid July 28, 2026 shows 81.1% of Kentucky drought-free, 18.9% at least abnormally dry, 5.7% in moderate drought or worse, and 2.75% already in severe drought. Barns in the dry pockets should watch pasture closely and price early-fall hay top-ups now, while the state's July 7 USDA hay report still shows plentiful new-crop supply moving at soft per-bale prices.

Five majors in four weeks: Pony Finals to the World's Championship

The Kentucky Horse Park calendar runs USEF Pony Finals August 4-9, Bluegrass Festival Horse Show August 11-16, KHJA Show August 19-23, and the USEA American Eventing Championships August 25-30, followed by Split Rock's Kentucky National CSI2* September 15-20 and Fall Classic CSI3* September 22-27. Louisville adds the World's Championship Horse Show at Freedom Hall with performances August 22-29 during the Kentucky State Fair. Barns along the Lexington-Louisville corridor should expect peak demand for layover stalls, schooling access, and short-term board through Labor Day and beyond.
