Market Insights

Georgia hay benchmark: Bermuda squares $340.40 a ton, diesel $5.953

Hay prices were steady in the Alabama Direct Hay Report dated Sept. 17, Georgia's regional benchmark, with good supply and light demand. Premium Bermuda grass small squares traded at $280 to $440 a ton, a $340.40 weighted average, and good Bermuda grass medium rounds averaged $112.60. The Energy Information Administration put Lower Atlantic diesel at $5.953 a gallon for the week of Sept. 28. Hauling at that price comes on top of the F.O.B. hay price for any load brought in.

Georgia 99.73% abnormally dry or worse, 32.44% in drought

Nearly all of Georgia, 99.73 percent, is abnormally dry (D0) or worse on the U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of Sept. 22, released Sept. 24. Moderate drought (D1) or worse covers 32.44 percent, and severe drought (D2) covers 3.51 percent, with none at D3 or worse. Dryness that widespread usually means thinner fall grazing and more hay fed ahead of winter.

Region 3 dressage in Conyers, reining and ranch classes in Perry

The Great American Insurance Group/USDF Region 3 Dressage Championships run Oct. 2 to 4 at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers. In Perry, the Georgia National Fair's livestock schedule runs Oct. 8 to 18 and includes a draft horse show and a feathered horse show. The Autumn Classic Charity Horse Show returns to the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry Nov. 20 to 22, with reining, ranch horse and western pleasure classes alongside hunters, jumpers and dressage. Championship weekends like Conyers tend to fill nearby stalls with horses hauling in from out of state.
