Florida's hay benchmark: Bermuda rounds $162.27 a ton, diesel $5.953
Florida's regional hay benchmark, the Alabama Direct Hay Report dated Sept. 17, put premium Bermuda grass medium rounds at $150 to $200 a ton, a $162.27 weighted average. Premium Bahia grass medium rounds averaged $126.82 a ton, and the report called prices steady, with good supply and light demand. Diesel in the Energy Information Administration's Lower Atlantic region was $5.953 a gallon for the week of Sept. 28. The hay prices are F.O.B., so freight at that diesel price comes on top of every delivered load.
50.83% of Florida in moderate drought or worse, 12.79% severe
Just over half of Florida, 50.83 percent, is in moderate drought (D1) or worse on the U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of Sept. 22, released Sept. 24. In all, 87.74 percent of the state is at least abnormally dry. Severe drought (D2) or worse covers 12.79 percent, and extreme drought (D3) covers 2.01 percent. Dry pasture usually means more hay in the ration, and that shows up on the feed line of a board bill.
WEC Ocala hunter/jumper weeks and an FQHA show in Jacksonville
At World Equestrian Center Ocala, the October I show runs Sept. 30 to Oct. 4 and October II runs Oct. 7 to 11, both Regional Hunter/Level 3 Jumper shows. WEC's November and December Show Series of USEF hunter/jumper competition opens with a Nov. 4 to 15 run. On the western side, the Florida Quarter Horse Association lists an FQHA Novice Show at Jacksonville Equestrian Center Oct. 24 to 25. Multiweek series like WEC's tend to lift short-term stall and layover demand near the showgrounds.
