Southeast hay benchmark: Bermuda rounds $171 a ton, diesel $5.35
Bermuda grass medium rounds traded at $171.45 per ton and small squares at $329.61 per ton in the latest Alabama Direct Hay Report dated Aug. 20, a regional benchmark for the Southeast. On-highway diesel was $5.35 per gallon as of Aug. 24 in the Lower Atlantic region, putting transport costs at their highest levels in months. Haulers passing those fuel surcharges to barns will pinch margins on delivered hay, especially for smaller operations buying in single or double loads.
Drought intensifies across Florida; 91% of state in D0 or worse
As of Aug. 25, the U.S. Drought Monitor showed 91% of Florida in drought severity D0 or worse, with 67% experiencing D1 or worse conditions. Pasture quality is deteriorating, forcing barns to supplement more hay and grain than typical for late summer. For operations relying on native pasture, that points to higher feed bills and tighter grazing windows through fall.
