Market Insights

Colorado horse hay sold higher, premium grass small squares at $16

Horse hay sold higher in the Colorado Direct Hay Report dated Sept. 24, with moderate trade and good to very good demand. Premium prairie/meadow grass small squares sold 50 cents a bale higher, and premium alfalfa small squares 25 to 40 cents higher. In the Northeast, premium mixed grass small squares brought $15.25 a bale for first cutting and $16 for second, F.O.B. stables, while premium prairie/meadow grass small squares brought $12.25 in the Southeast and premium orchard grass small squares $20 in the Southwest. Diesel in the Energy Information Administration's Rocky Mountain region ran $6.407 a gallon for the week of Sept. 28, which adds to the cost of every load by the time it reaches the barn.

Extreme or exceptional drought covers 38.47% of Colorado

Extreme or exceptional drought covers 38.47 percent of Colorado on the U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of Sept. 22, released Sept. 24, and exceptional drought alone covers 13.37 percent. The map puts 93.52 percent of the state abnormally dry or worse, 85.72 percent in moderate drought or worse and 67.86 percent in severe drought or worse. The USDA hay report, citing the Drought Monitor's High Plains summary, says beneficial rain improved drought categories over parts of the region, but exceptional drought still shows in much of central Colorado. In the hardest-hit areas, that likely means little fall grazing and more horses on hay full time.
