Market Insights
Premium horse hay jumps $10 a bale as heat grips southeast Colorado
Premium 3x3 mixed grass horse hay sold $10 per bale higher than the prior report, while small squares of mixed grass climbed 50 cents per bale. Diesel for hay haulers sits at $5.537 per gallon as of Aug. 24, adding real cost to every load. Trade activity remains moderate but demand is good to very good across all markets, which means barns paying top dollar now may see that premium squeeze margins through fall if new crop stays tight.
Nearly half of Colorado in extreme drought; pasture stress mounting
As of Aug. 25, 48% of Colorado falls in extreme or exceptional drought (D3-D4), and 96% of the state is at least abnormally dry. Southeast Colorado saw rapid deterioration from dry conditions and excessive heat, while the Rockies are beginning to feel water storage impacts from last spring's limited snow. Pasture forage is likely already short, and any barns depending on summer turnout are probably scrambling to stretch hay and grain supplies into fall.
Colorado Horse Park finale kicks off September; Mountain Region reining finals follow
Colorado Finale 1 runs Sept. 2-6 and Finale 2 runs Sept. 9-13 at Colorado Horse Park, both featuring hunter jumper and dressage classes with purses up to $30,000. For western barns, the Mountain Region Affiliate Finals reining show lands Sept. 24-27 in Loveland. Both draw serious competitors from across the region.
