Colorado horse hay climbs again; stable grass smalls hit $15-$20 a bale
USDA's Colorado Direct Hay Report (July 30, 2026) says horse hay per-bale prices "continue to increase as drought conditions worsen," with small squares of grass selling steady to $1.00 per bale higher and demand Good to Very Good on new-crop hay. Stable-bound trades ran $14.25 per small square of premium alfalfa and $15.00-$20.00 per bale for premium-to-good mixed grass F.O.B. stables in northeast Colorado, with 3x3 mixed grass at $175-$180 per bale. Rocky Mountain diesel averaged $5.141/gal the week of July 27, 2026, up $1.36 from a year ago, adding to delivered-hay costs. The next Colorado report is August 13, 2026.
Half of Colorado in extreme-exceptional drought; pastures just 2% good
The U.S. Drought Monitor map valid July 28, 2026 puts 97.5% of Colorado in D0 or worse, 81.62% in severe drought or worse, 50.76% in extreme-to-exceptional drought (D3-D4) and 13.89% in exceptional D4. USDA NASS Crop Progress for the week ending July 19, 2026 rates Colorado pasture and range 76% very poor to poor with only 2% good, and topsoil moisture 93% very short to short. USDA's July 30 hay report adds that Denver just logged its 2nd-warmest 30-day stretch on record (+3 F departure), so plan on earlier supplemental feeding and locking in winter hay now.
