Horse hay up $5/bale as Colorado demand runs Very Good
USDA's Colorado Direct Hay Report (June 18, 2026) shows 3x3 bales of old-crop alfalfa horse hay selling $5.00 per bale higher, with demand rated Good to Very Good on both old- and new-crop hay. Stable-delivered trades ranged from $13.75 per small square bale of premium first-cut alfalfa in northeast Colorado up to $170 per 3x3 bale of supreme old-crop alfalfa. Hauling costs stay elevated too: Rocky Mountain on-highway diesel averaged $4.602 per gallon on June 29, 2026 — down about 19 cents on the week but $0.94 above a year ago. Barns buying summer hay now should expect these input increases to surface in board rates.
100% of Colorado abnormally dry; 79.5% in severe drought
U.S. Drought Monitor data valid June 30, 2026 (map released July 2) shows 100% of Colorado at least abnormally dry, 92.96% in moderate drought or worse, and 79.52% in severe drought or worse — with extreme drought expanding to 39.2% and 9.3% in exceptional drought. Severe-or-worse coverage eased from 84.69% on June 23, but USDA's June 18 hay report still cites worsening drought conditions in the plains of eastern Colorado. With pasture stressed statewide, expect demand to shift from pasture board toward dry-lot and full-care programs that depend on purchased hay.
Grand prix weeks pack Colorado Horse Park stalls in July
The Colorado Horse Park in Parker runs three consecutive hunter/jumper competition weeks July 1–19, 2026: Colorado Summer 4 (July 1–5) and Colorado Summer 5 (July 8–12) each anchored by a $50,000 American Standard Grand Prix, capped by Colorado Summer 6 (July 15–19) with a $75,000 National Standard Grand Prix. The 148-acre venue at 5,869 feet fills its permanent and temporary stabling with traveling competitors for nearly three straight weeks, tightening short-term stall and layover-boarding supply across Douglas County and the south Denver metro.
