Market Insights
California hay at $240-$330 a ton, diesel at $6.41
California alfalfa premium large squares were trading at $240-$330 per ton delivered for new crop as of Aug. 28, with good trade activity and very good dairy and retail demand. West Coast diesel was $6.407 per gallon in the week ending Aug. 24. Haulers passing those fuel costs to hay buyers means boarding operations paying per-bale or per-ton fees will see transportation premiums reflected in September invoicing.
Dry conditions persist across two-thirds of California
As of Aug. 25, 65 percent of California was in drought condition D0 or worse, with 14 percent experiencing D1 or worse, according to the US Drought Monitor. Pasture quality remains stressed heading into fall, which typically brings California's first meaningful moisture. Boarding barns relying on native or irrigated pasture turnout may need to budget extra hay or supplemental feed through late September and October if the monsoon pattern stays weak.
