Market Insights

Arizona hay market still steady, premium alfalfa trades at $12 a bale

Arizona's hay market is still steady compared with the last report, according to the Arizona Direct Hay Report dated Sept. 18. The only reported trade that week was 1,920 small squares of premium alfalfa at $12 a bale, retail. Sellers were asking $16.50 to $17.50 a bale for supreme alfalfa small squares, $19 to $19.50 for premium Bermuda grass small squares and $24.50 for premium teff. Diesel in the Energy Information Administration's West Coast region outside California was $6.643 a gallon for the week of Sept. 28, a cost built into every delivered load.

Drought covers 68.3% of Arizona at D1 or worse

Drought still covers most of Arizona on the U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of Sept. 22, released Sept. 24. The map puts 90.76 percent of the state abnormally dry or worse and 68.3 percent in moderate drought or worse, down from 77.16 percent the week before. Severe drought or worse covers 25.55 percent, and extreme drought covers 1.88 percent. With most of the state still dry, pasture carries less of the load and more of each horse's ration comes out of the hay barn.
