The Arizona Direct Hay Report for the week ending Aug. 21 shows premium alfalfa in small square 3-tie bales trading at $12 per bale, with supreme grade asking prices reaching $16.50-$17.50 per bale. Bermuda grass large squares are asking $15 per bale and premium teff in small squares runs $24.50 per bale. On-highway diesel in the West Coast region outside California sits at $5.859 per gallon as of Aug. 24, a steep hauling cost for barns shipping feed long distances.
Drought grips Arizona, 93% of state abnormally dry or worse
As of Aug. 25, the U.S. Drought Monitor shows 93 percent of Arizona in drought category D0 (abnormally dry) or worse, with 77 percent at D1 (moderate drought) or worse. That leaves pasture quality thin across the state heading into fall, meaning more boarding operators will lean on stored hay and supplemental feed to keep horses in condition. Turnout hours may shrink as pastures thin, which lands hardest on barns built around all-day grazing.
Three fall rodeos and a cutting event in the next 60 days
The 111th Sonoita Labor Day Rodeo runs Sept. 5-7, followed by the Sonoita Ranch Rodeo Sept. 12-13 and the 111th Santa Cruz County Fair and rodeo events Sept. 18-20. The Arizona Cutting Horse Association has its Oktoberfest show scheduled Oct. 14-18 in Queen Creek.
